Heather & Michael Colletto
Fun fact: Since we married in January 2008, we’ve lived in five apartments in four cities on three continents. We also spent one summer in a Honda Civic and a winter in our niece’s pink bedroom.
We are writers, editors, and communications professionals by both training and experience, and we’ve always been drawn to projects and causes that serve the greater good. But our passion for the issue of human trafficking began rather unexpectedly in 2009 during a six-month position living and working in Central and Eastern Europe. While working with international media organization TWR, our eyes were opened to the full scope of the global tragedy of modern slavery and commercial sexual exploitation. When we returned to the United States, we began seeking ways to become part of the solution. We soon become connected with The SOLD Project and, in January 2010, began serving full-time as their communications team.
We spent the second half of 2010 living and working with The SOLD Project from their base in Northern Thailand. Our time spent living at SOLD’s Resource Center outside Chiang Rai served as hands-on training for our roles representing SOLD through all print and online communications. We learned about the culture, the people, studied the language, and fell in love with the children SOLD serves. Our time in Thailand was cut short by an unexpected injury, and we returned to the States to continue our work with SOLD in December 2010. A huge piece of our hearts is still in Thailand.
